Thermoplastics will be applied to critical parts of automobiles
at present, automobile manufacturers are focusing on the application of plastics around engines to reduce vehicle quality and improve fuel economy. Three major American automobile companies have applied thermoplastics to manufacture automobile exterior decoration and liquid containers and battery covers around engines. As a further development, they are considering applying plastics to more critical parts around the engine
Jim Ryan, head of plastic application department of chassis and engine system of dyke company for non-metallic materials experiment, said: "when we look at the future with a strategic perspective, we find that the power system and chassis metal aluminum have high chemical activity. The system is the first field in which thermoplastic application company has won the PMA certificate of Boeing 757c/c composite aircraft brake pair of large trunk aircraft in China, which is truly promising for growth"
the information of automotive composites alliance, a supplier of thermosetting plastics, shows that the application of polymer composites around engines has increased by 80% from 1996 to now, from 8.16kt to 14.10kt. Plastic parts include intake manifold, air cleaner assembly, valve cover and engine cover. Plastic suppliers believe that plastics should be more widely used around the engine, such as intake system components, oil basins and gear box shells with relatively low risk of speed change.
